[ValleyNature] May 17 chimney swifts, Wolfville & New Glasgow, and call for volunteers

MAY 17, 2010 - At dusk at Robie Tufts Nature Centre in Wolfville,  
Brenda & Bill Thexton counted 52 chimney swifts going into the  
chimney on a lovely evening.  BUT earlier that evening, just before  
7:30 p.m., George E. Forsyth heard and then saw at least 3 chimney  
swifts not far from the southwest chimney on University Hall of  
Acadia University (which was heavily used by roosting swifts through  
the 1970s and 1980s).  Thus we need to check out that old site for  
the swifts to see if there is any roosting activity going on these  
days/dusks.

At the Blomidon Naturalists Society meeting tonight, I mentioned that  
we badly need volunteers to do observations at dusk, at both the RTNC  
and Univ. Hall in Wolfville and other places for swifts, and please  
write down what you see at the RTNC or phone me (542-9204) or e-mail  
-- I "guesstimate" the numbers as they go into the chimneys by 10s,  
since they often "pour in" so quickly that a one-by-one count is  
impossible.

AND at the Temperance St. School in New Glasgow, Ken McKenna had a  
great evening and "counted" 386 chimney swifts going into the chimney  
there at dusk.
