REPORT FROM JAKE MACDONALD of lower Maple Ave., Wolfville:
A few weeks ago Jake reported hearing calling barred owls and feeling
that there were probably more than two of the owls near his house;
well, soon thereafter he was able to observe four of the owls (i.e.,
two pairs) with the aid of the street lights and a flashlight;
perhaps he lives close to a boundary between two territories??
About two weeks ago Jake saw a female red-winged blackbird, and then
a male red-winged blackbird showed up on March 16. On March 18 there
were 11 males, all singing in a "group gronk".
A single c. grackle was present at Jake's place on March 15, and then
today on March 19 there were about 20 of them.
I personally have not seen any grackles nor blackbirds yet this year,
but I always look forward to seeing and hearing the early flocks --
the so-called song of the grackle always makes me laugh, but I hope
the female grackles have a different attitude!
