NOV. 8, 2009 - This morning I clearly saw 6 different n. cardinals at
our feeders: 3 males and 3 females, and 1 male and 1 female had pink
beaks (adults?). Other recent customers include about 5 pheasants, 2
downy woodpeckers, 2 hairy woodpeckers, no nuthatches of either kind
for a long time, 2 crows, 8 blue jays, 4 bl.-c. chickadees, 12
mourning doves, a few white-throated sparrows, 2 song sparrows, no
goldfinches nor purple finches, and no mammals except an occasional
domestic cat from adjacent yards.
NOV. 9, 2009 - Harris' Pond in Canning: just a single male hooded
merganser.
In Wolfville Harbour at low tide, only 7 black ducks (usually more,
with mallards) sieving the organically very rich mud, which year-
round is full of critters and plants, both living and dead (hence the
expression from Sherman Bleakney, the "yummy muds of Minas".
Brenda & Bill Thexton saw Canada geese in two places: 200 in the
lower Habitant River, east of Canning, and 120+ flying in to the
lower Cornwallis River, se. of Port Williams.
NOV. 15, 2009 - Two notable new additions to our feeder fauna this
morning: a female n. flicker and a white-breasted nuthatch. Also
notable were 6 n. cardinals at once, 2 males & 4 females. If we
still have a 3rd male, which was the case a week ago, then there are
at least 7 in total.
Also I saw a red squirrel in an adjacent yard yesterday (none seen
for several weeks at least).
Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
