MAR. 10, 2009 - At the RAVEN NEST high in the pines just north of the
Acadia Univ. Arena, two RAVENS flew into the site while I watched and
then flew out and away shortly thereafter. I therefore assume they
have not started incubation of eggs yet?
I checked the BALD EAGLE NEST just east of Wolfville, east of Eye
Road -- an adult eagle was only slightly visible in the nest (I could
only see the top of her head with my scope), and she? was fidgeting
apparently with something in the nest -- nest materials or possibly
eggs?
A MOURNING DOVE was "singing" in late afternoon in Wolfville, and
yesterday I heard a singing WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.
This evening Bernard Forsythe fed his single BARRED OWL (male from
his deep hooting) as usual in his back yard on Wolfville Ridge -- BUT
for the first time this year he became aware of a SECOND BARRED OWL,
which was obviously the male's mate, shown by the male taking the
food and giving it to her (courtship feeding). As Bernard says, this
bodes well for this year's late-April N.S. Bird Society/Blomidon
Naturalists Society field trip, at which we hope his yard and
nesting? owls will be our first stop.
Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
