FEBRUARY 1, 2009 - EAGLE WATCH WEEKEND II, Sunday -- A bunch of us
did our 28th ANNUAL CYRIL K. COLDWELL EAGLES/RAPTORS COUNT OF EASTERN
KINGS COUNTY today. Nice conditions for observation and for getting
the eagles to the poultry feeding sites -- -7 to -6 C., mostly Sunny,
and fairly light wind from the west. We had 16 field parties and a
total of 37 observers, and we only counted up our designated areas
from 10 to 11 a.m.

Our totals for birds of prey counted were as follows:

294 BALD EAGLES : 184 adults, 106 immatures, 4 of unknown age (for
aged eagles, 63.4% adults, 36.6% immatures).

48 RED-TAILED HAWKS (including the NEARLY-ALL-WHITE INDIVIDUAL at
Hortonville).

1 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK (light phase).

2 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS.

1 NORTHERN GOSHAWK adult.

2 PEREGRINE FALCONS.

Other observations during count: OTTER signs & 4 DEER & BLACK DUCKS
(& mergansers?) along Gaspereau River,100+ WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS
along Evangeline Beach, 50+ BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, a few ROBINS.

I've been the coordinator of this annual count ever since Cyril
Coldwell died in January of 1994.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
